Future U

Teens at the Martin Luther King Branch participated in a month long program called Future U. Teens researched jobs that interested them, interviewed staff about their first jobs, filled out examples of job applications, attended programs about different jobs, held mock interviews with staff, and attended an awards ceremony.

Here's a few snapshots of the visits.

Plans Available Upon Request

Caldecott honoree, Oge mora

Teens were able to chat it up with former MLK Volunteen, Oge Mora. Current Voluteens ate pizza with Oge and asked her what it was like to write and illustrate a successful children's book.

Oge spent the entire day at the Martin Luther King Branch. In the morning she visited with Mansion Day School, chatted with teens mid-afternoon, and was the visiting author for the evening.

Staff and customers alike appreciated hearing about her book, Thank You Omu!

Here she is at the book signing.

Poetry with Barbara fant

MLK teens stepped out of their comfort zone and shared poems they wrote with poet Barbara Fant and Meg Brown of Thurber House. After writing poetry, the teens were able to decorate their journals they received for participating in the program with cool stickers. This is just one of the exciting events planned for the Future U program!

Graphic novelist terry eisele speaks with teens & tweens

Graphic Novelist, Terry Eisele spoke to MLK's tweens and teens about what it's like to write a graphic novel. He told us about his inspiration for the protaganist, Fartune in his graphic novel Fartune - Autumn. After Terry's presentation, everyone spent time creating their very own graphic novels.

Here's a few happy tweens checking out a copy for themselves and posing with the author and myself!
